Games roundup: November

Posted by Phil Mellor on 21:02, 29/11/2006 | ,

ThrustIt's been a while since we last had an update on Acorn Arcade, so here's a roundup of the latest RISC OS games news.

RISC OS games
Jan de Boer has written a program to create and solve 12 different types of Sudoku puzzle, while Chris Wright has been working on a RISC OS version of the strategy game RISK. Another Chris, a Bazley no less, has made more changes to his StarFighter 3000 graphics editors.

Ports
ThrustOver the past couple of weeks we've seen RISC OS ports of the 8-bit classic Thrust, along with Freedroid and Hex-A-Hop.

HOMM2 expansion pack
Sion CleaverChampion of RISC OS gaming, Sion Cleaver (pictured), was eager for us to mention his new map pack for Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Era of the Phoenix costs £10, and the maps can be played by 1-6 players. You can download a demo version from his website.

Flash crap of the week
Finally, while work progresses on a RISC OS Flash player, we bring you Asteroid's Revenge by Flash Ninja Clan.

Update: I am an idiot
Michael Drake has reminded me of several things I meant to include but forgot: "Also there has recently been a release of ACED, a 3D space shoot-em-up. Other news that was not reported on AA was an early release of Jeffrey Lee's action game Death Dawn, various new levels for Asylum and the port of SEGA Mega Drive emulator, PicoDrive to RISC OS. :)"

Thanks Mike. Thike.

early release
Well, I guess that's one way of putting it. On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is fertilization of the egg and 10 is the birth of the baby, I'd give it about a 2.5 :P

Have you any plans to do more on it, now the new TIB is out the way?

Out the way? Well on a scale of 1 to 10... ;)

But yes, I do plan to eventually get some more work done on it. The next release will, at the least, contain some code for R/B swapping since the finished version of RISC OS 5.12 doesn't seem to do it in 16bpp modes (Feel free to correct me - I know I have about 100 unread mails from the Iyonix list)

How does that affect ACED, which IIRC runs in 16bpp?

FWIW, PicoDrive 0.11 will detect if you have RO 5.12 and swap red and blue accordingly, if you are in a 16bpp mode.

It won't - ACED runs in 8bpp.

£19 for a game with shoddy graphics! You can get a decent game for a mac or pc for £19!

Oh come on now, we all know that graphics don't make a game good. It's about the gameplay itself, surely.

Plus, I'd hardly say they were shoddy graphics. In fact, I'd say they were beautiful. And certainly the most original I've seen for ages.

Yeah, but it's not very appealing for gamers used to highly realistic graphics.

Have gamers used to highly realistic graphics never seen a cartoon, or an abstract painting, or a thumbnail sketch? Maybe gamers used to highly realistic graphics should widen their horizons ;)

Anyway, what's a gamer used to highly realistic graphics doing playing games on an Acorn? :P |chuck|

You mean that gamers who are used to games that all look the same want even more of the same?

I don't just play games on RISC OS, I also play games on PC, PS2 etc. and all of the latest games releases for RISC OS have had rather good graphics.

This is a strange comment comming from a kid asking 10 ponds for an expansion pack for HH2.

BTW it's 19 dollars not pounds
