ArtWorks 2.4 - beautiful blends and better bitmaps

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 13:29, 26/5/2005 | , , ,

ArtWorks Rainbow BlendsAccording to ArtWorks newsletter #62, Martin released another spiffy new version of our fave vector graphics package at the Wakefield show. This wasn't technically a press release, but what the heck, it kind of reads like one, and it's worth mentioning, so I've uploaded it for your viewing pleasure.

New to this release are PNG and JPEG export, which is great for Web development, and a funky rainbow blend option. OK, so rainbow blends aren't that serious, but they're so very pretty. Bitmap export has been tidied up in a number of other ways, the most useful being export of files larger than the available memory, and improved colour separations - put both together and you've got much better print bureau-ready output. Printing direct from ArtWorks itself has been improved too.

This is something that I really want. I currently have Artworks 1.7, but don't have the money to buy 2.4. Artworks is a great package.

Those rainbow blends look a bit garish. Can you be more selective with the colours?

You can set the start and end points in the spectrum.

Note that it's not a rainbow fill, like in Photodesk. You have to blend between two objects, which limits its usefulness slightly and makes it a bit more complex to use than a true rainbow fill would be. For example, to get rainbowed text you'd have to create a blend like the example above, put the text on top and intersect them. You can't just apply the rainbow effect to the text, like a gradient fill.
