RISC OS on Wikipedia

Posted by Andrew Duffell on 20:48, 10/5/2005 | , ,

stock/HardDriveMany of you will be familiar with the Wikipedia project. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and covers just about every topic you can imagine. If it doesn't cover a topic, anyone can create a page about that topic.

What's RISC OS got to do with it?
There are many pages on Wikipedia to do with RISC OS, ranging from the base RISC OS article to applications such as NetSurf and people such as Chris Curry. These pages are mostly kept up to date by a few RISC OS enthusiasts, but the more people who input, and edit these pages, the more valuable and extensive the information about our OS becomes.

To edit a page, click on the 'Edit page' link, make your adjustments, and submit them. A few good places to start for RISC OS on Wikipedia are listed below.

On one of the pages of an old Beebug magazine was an advertisement that stated that the A300 or something equally as ancient won an award in the USA for being the "best business machine" at a popular trade show. Shame I don't have those mags any more.

One thing that would be good for the Acorn Wiki is to explain how Acorn computers had more horsepower than competitors and multimedia features as standard way before the term was even coined. Just how would you write that without sounding biased?

Yes, this is the NPOV policy, one of the five "pillars".

For anyone who's not been made otherwise aware, I'm suggesting the coordination of Wikipedia articles related to RISC OS (note that suggestions/comments will be more useful on that talk page than here).

Knowing the current quality of the acorn and risc os pages on wikipedia and my own efforts to track down additional references, if you don't add references for anything you add I will personally delete it. I don't think I can live with any more rampant fanboy crap on those pages.

If you read Wikipedia the article about the 'Archimedes range' you can read this :
'In 1992, a new range was produced, using the ARM250 microprocessor, an ARM2 processor with integrated memory and video controllers
'
Unfortunately it's wrong : the ARM250 is not made with an ARM2 but with an ARM3 with no cache memory ...
It's correctly detailed here, in the 'ARM3' section :
http://www.cs.umd.edu/class/fall2001/cmsc411/proj01/arm/armchip.html
As I don't know how to add/modify anything on Wikipedia if a good soul can do it, thanks ...

Done, but I'm always reluctant to do that as English is not my mother tongue.
Feel free to correct my (very) possible mistakes.
Thanks.

Hello.
I'd be happy to help but what should I do ?
Translate the English pages ?
Add notes about the impact of the Archimedes on the French computer enthousiasts ?
Comment about the great involvement showed by Acorn to promote its computers in my country ?
I also own a good collection of French magazines, with elogious comments about the machines. I also knew many people from the French demomaking scene, thanks to the French minitel at this pre Internet time.
To be honest, I wanted to create a web site about all this, but if some of it can be in the French Wikipedia pages, it'd be with pleasure.
Salutations amicales,
Xavier.

Thanks for your enthusiasm but as we still have to track down and include a load of references and get the content agreed by consensus, then it'd need translating again in the future.
Add notes about the impact of the Archimedes on the French computer enthousiasts ?
If you fancy tracking down any articles in the French computing press about this, then they may contain info which would be appropriate for inclusion.
Comment about the great involvement showed by Acorn to promote its computers in my country ?
Remember: "Wikipedia is not a soapbox, a battleground, or a vehicle for propaganda, advertising and showcasing." and also the Five pillars in general. What's actually needed should be defined in the project's scope (when we get there).
I also own a good collection of French magazines, with elogious comments about the machines. I also knew many people from the French demomaking scene, thanks to the French minitel at this pre Internet time.
French machine release/availability dates may be of interest, previous Acorn office locations in France (if any) and popularity of killer apps in France (e.g. did composers/music publishing houses buy RiscPCs to run Sibelius, as I understand they did in Britain?). All of this will need verifiable sources.
To be honest, I wanted to create a web site about all this, but if some of it can be in the French Wikipedia pages, it'd be with pleasure.
The facts will be suitable for Wikipedia. Opinions, biased historical recounts and magazine scans (e.g. ARMazine) etc. should go elsewhere.

Anyway, I'm sure you can find the French versions of the Wikipedia policies, etc. so have a read and see what you think!

For anyone who's not been following the discussions on Wikipedia, flibble and I have got this started. (And no "rampant fanboy crap" so far, either!)

I think I'm right in saying that the main thing we're short of is sources, sources, SOURCES. So if you have any, please join in! There are a few administrative matters remaining to sort out with the 'Parent Project', WikiProject Computing - but that doesn't stop new members joining. (And we also got a mention on the WikiProject 'News in Brief' this week.)

Arse - perhaps you can be banned! Seriously, the more the merrier smile

WikiProjects have room for everyone: editors, sharers of knowledge/opinions*, image-copyright-tidier-uppers, researchers of references... the list goes on!

* That's opinions on article content/layout/deletions, etc. not opinions along the lines of "RISC OS is/was the best"!

I am thoroughly in approval of this effort, and have a Wikipedia account. There is even a small chance that one day I might add a reference or correct a typo. Should I add myself under the Participants section of the project, or is that intended for more... active participants?

Thanks for your vote of support. I'm sure that any valid references will be more than welcome, particularly from printed press, which is often unavailable online. I think it may be possible to define templates for commonly used references - if so, it would save some copy/pasting between articles. If this is possible, then it'd be useful to be able to pass a parameter to individual templates (possibly different in each usage) containing a relevant extract to quote.
Should I add myself under the Participants section of the project, or is that intended for more... active participants?
AFAIK, anyone interested can add themselves - and if you partipate in the project but don't list yourself, you're still considered a member anyway. Additionally, participants in a WikiProject cannot override community consensus.

Following discussions at Wakefield 2011, further explanations for new users will be included in due course. For the moment, the sign-up procedure has been slightly expanded upon.

An IRL meeting may be proposed for the day of the 2011 London show. Let's see what further improvements we can make between now and then...

design copyrights certainly aren't a license compatible with Wikimedia Commons.
Even for simple designs?
Unfortuanately the legal backing for such an assumption is based on US case law. A place where neither the designs were created, nor the reproductions created, nor where I live.
(Sorry for hijacking that thread, Jason.)

I don't think that matters, it's a matter of Commons policy... unless you think someone's going to come chasing you for royalties as the recreator of the logos (in which case, you'd better ensure no one prints them on T-shirts to be worn in public).

Here are some examples of accepted logos on Commons which may have a bit of a UK leaning, which could be food for thought.
