Hello everyone, m,y name is Stuart and I have just signed up to this forum, I am looking to re-kindle the love of the Acorn which was the first computer I have used properly before I moved to Amigas. I was hoping someone may be able to help me, I am looking for an old copy of Protracker, this from memory was a very early version which ran on the desktop and not in its own window, I have searched high and low with no success, I have found a later Protracker for the Acorn but when I try to run it though RPCEmu, I just get a grey screen, tried ROMS 3.5 and 3.7 but the same outcome.
Please can someone help?

Many thanks.

Many thanks, Protrack, that brings back memories, I had forgotten all about that big smile But I cant load protracker, each time I do, the screen goes grey, then I have to restart the emulator, any ideas?

You may want to try it under Arculator with RISCOS 3.11 instead of RPCEmu, it sounds like it may not be compatible with either RPCEmu or RO3.5+

Thanks though this makes a whole new problem unhappy I have installed Arculator, found an older copy of Sparkplug and extracted the files but it corrupts, every time. I notice that I cant do things like create draws or edit "set type" almost as if the HDD was protected

Have a read of KarateEd's Arculator install guide, it may help.

I suspect your experience of trying to use any audio software in an emulator is going to be dire. I'd recommend either using any of the real RPC or earlier models of the Acorn hardware, or use any of the many native Trackers on the PC. I personally quite liked FastTracker, but a few people are using Renoise professionally, so that might be worth a look.

Hello and thank you for suggesting the installation help guide, installing a HDD fixed all the problems, something I will try later on the RPCEmu, just in case its that. Protracker works though its not the version I am looking for, the one I am trying to find works on the desktop rather than its own seperate window, the one I have is much the same as the Amiga version.

I do have trackers on the PC and Amigas and the one on the RISC emulator works too, its more along the lines of trying to relive the experience when I was first using computers, I would like to get a Risc PC sometime soon too, but just playing with the emulator first which seems to work m just fine.

Does anyone have an alternate version of Protracker? it may be an earlier version I am looking for.

Trackers that I can think of off the top of my head, could it have been one of these instead:

Coconizer
Wimp Tracker
Oregon's Digital Symphony
VTi Desktop Tracker
Arc ProTracker

EDIT: Also found:
Vivaldi

Some of these, including ProTracker, are on the Stuttgart FTP site and The QubeServer

Just checking you are not getting confused. The proper Protracker was Amiga only, the read-only version by John Tytgat etc was the pre-runner to Digital Symphony.

Thanks, I am pretty sure it was Protracker but a very different version to the Amiga ones, I first saw this Protracker on an Acorn then discovered it was available on Amiga some 20 years back, I used the Amiga one ever since however the Acorn one, the protracker version which does not look like protracker is the one I am trying to find.
I could be confusing it with a another Acorn tracker though, a desktop based version, I do however remember you couldn't edit with it hence why I started using the Amiga, Protrack is defiantly one of the bits of software I use to have.

Ah, then there are a load of others it might be. I seem to recall Hugo Fiennes made a soundtracker module which spawned a variety of players. There was also the QTM player.

Thanks, just had a look at TQM but that's not it either, you had a visual layout showing the tracks, switchable between 4 or 8, I did come across another tracker for the Acorn which was similar but not it, if I work out what it is I will post a link

At a guess I'd say it's probably Coconizer.
I'm pretty sure that's the only other non-WIMP based Tracker editor.

its defiantly not Coconizer as it opens in its own window though its very similar to Wimp tracker, does anyone have a copy of Wimp tracker or know where I can find it?

OK, I think my memory has things wrong, maybe there was a tracker on the Acorn and it was something else and the Amiga version was Protracker, we are talking 22 years ago, so far this is where I am
STracker =Havent found it
WIMPTracker =Cant find but looks similar
Coconizer =Tried and not it
Desktop Tracker =Tried and not it
PDTracker =Tried and not it
Digital Symphony =Too new, never seen this before
Protracker =Tried and its the same as the Amiga, not the one I am looking for
Tracker =Defiantly used this player (Ahh memories)
TQM =Tried and not it

Also on my searches, another application sprung up called FLUX, that rings a bell if anyone knows where there is a copy.

Thanks very much for all your help on this, its really appreciated.

Ah sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you were looking for standalone Tracker Editors.

!WIMPTracker (unpatched) won't run in anything post Archimedes iirc. I'll also warn you that the pitch bend and pattern jump are different to that of Acorn Tracker (Hugo F.'s one), which is pretty much the defacto standard of Tracker on the Archimedes. So I wouldn't recommend writing any music for games/demos in it wink

There was also another standalone Tracker Editor called !Musix, but it was awful.

I personally found Digital Symphony to be the best bar far, and being in a WIMP Environment made life easier.

It certainly loaded anything I threw at it, and preferred it's implementation of Klisje Paa Klisje

FLUX blew the minds of my friends at School... The fact it worked on a computer which they deemed 'slow' (a310)

It would be nice to see this updated to 32 Bit!
