If you don't follow newsgroups, this can be the place to be to keep up on the seedier side of the Acorn gaming community! Here is a daily roundup of the latest threads on the newsgroup comp.sys.acorn.games, and any new rumours that may be floating about. It only contains currently relevant articles, and articles may be updated as days go by, so remember to read them regularly, and to read the lot, not just the topmost articles!

Andrew Rawnsley has announced that Quake will soon ship with a souped up version of ArcQuake. This version will have support for Malice, a proper installer and an improved front-end. Apparently there is still room for performance improvements, and the whole thing should run faster under RISC OS 4 anyway. It won't be as fast as Martin Piper's version, but at least this version will get done and Quake fans will have something to show for their money. When the upgrade will be available is currently a bit hazey, and I'd be surprised if Andrew Rawnsley gives us a firm date after all the fuss and missed deadlines from Martin.

There has been quite a lot of speculation over the possibility of multiplayer Internet support for Exodus. A couple of people have said they might be interested in looking into it, and a few people have said they'd pay for such an upgrade. Whether anything'll come of it, who knows, but it will be interesting to see.
 
Jan Klose told Acorn Arcade that such an upgrade would be possible, but the programmer would have know quite a bit about networking, and be prepared to work with horrible, mostly un-documented code. He also said that Artex would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in such a project.

Someone asked about the situation with Doggysoft's game hacking program Desktop Hacker. The game was supplied on one of the Risc User magazine discs a few months ago but this does not make it freeware. Anyone who wants the program can get it by ordering the magazine disc for RU issue 11:6, or the Volume 11 Special Disc. The 11:6 disc costs £5.85, and the Special Disc costs £15.95 + £1.10 P&P. As a quick followup to the discussion a few months back about the never-implemented military part of Global Effect, with the help of Chris Stapleton, Jason Tribbeck and a couple of other ex-Argo/Eclipse people, we've managed to gain permission to put the source for the military part of the game in the Coding Vault. More details are available there, but suffice it to say it's not an easy job.
